Getting around Naples
Everything you need to get around without stress.
From the airport to the city
Naples airport (Capodichino, NAP) is close to the city. The main options are the bus and the taxi.
Alibus bus
This is the bus connecting the airport with the city. From the airport it serves, among other stops, the main railway station (Napoli Centrale / Piazza Garibaldi) and the port (Molo Beverello, near Piazza Municipio).
If your accommodation is near a metro station, you can get off at Piazza Garibaldi and continue on Line 1.
Taxi
Fixed fares are available for certain routes from the airport to the centre.
From Piazza Garibaldi
From Garibaldi station, Line 1 connects to stations such as Duomo, Università, Municipio, Toledo, Dante and Museo.
How to get around
Metro
Line 1 connects key points of the city (Museo, Dante, Toledo, Municipio, Garibaldi). Several of its stations are decorated with artwork.
Funicular
Three funiculars (Centrale, Chiaia, Montesanto) go up to the Vomero hill, a practical way to get to and from the centre.
Circumvesuviana
The local railway to Ercolano, Pompeii and Sorrento departs from Napoli Garibaldi station.
Ferries and hydrofoils
Boats to Capri and other islands in the bay leave from the port (Molo Beverello and nearby). Buy your ticket ahead of time in summer.
On foot
The historic centre and the Santa Lucia-Chiaia area are easily covered on foot. Watch out for scooters and steps.
Practical tips
- If you're heading to Pompeii or Vesuvius, the train is usually simpler than driving.
- Don't rent a car for the centre. Traffic and parking are difficult, and there are ZTL restricted zones.
- Keep your belongings close on busy transport and in busy spots.
- Always check schedules and tickets with official sources.
Pick a base that suits your travel plans
Stazione Centrale is practical for trains, while for a central location and the metro, look at Via Toledo, Santa Lucia or Centro Storico.
